Nose reshaping

Nose reshaping is an art and medical science that goes by the technical term rhinoplasty. Plastic surgery of this type involves the use of one of two procedures, anesthesia, and a willingness to have bandages over the face for up to a month. The typical healing time varies from one to two weeks for complete healing barring complications.

The process of nose reshaping begins in the surgeon’s office. There the procedure will be discussed and nasal reshaping options will be shown to the patient. In older days this plastic surgery involved using images in a book. Computers are used now and there are many interesting programs that can give the patient a solid idea of what they will look like after their surgery.

The two medical procedures that might be used are the open and closed methods. The open method involves the cutting of the columnella, a partition of flesh that covers the division of the nostrils, and the lifting of the nasal skin so that the surgeon has complete access to the nasal cavity. The closed method does not require the external skin to be cut and is done from within the nose.

Typical complications to this surgery include permanent stiffness, infection, and in the case of gross incompetence a collapse or weakness in the nose may exist afterward. The last two complications mentioned will undoubtedly require revision rhinoplasty which means going under the surgical knife once more.

Other than complications that may occur there are typical side effects. These side effects of nose reshaping include bruising, swelling, and red splotches if capillaries are burst. Numbness at the tip of the nose is not uncommon but unlike the stiffness that can occur any numbness usually alleviates within a few months.
